Trumpet Marine

an ancient, single-stringed instrument played with a bow. The trumpet marine’s triangular body was wooden and approximately 2 m in height. Sound was produced by drawing the bow over the string near the nut. The trumpet marine was used in many Western European navies as a signal; in church music it was used in place of the trumpet.
